The big news story this month is that the Nelson Weekly News Editor will be coming out of dietetic retirement after almost 2 years. Rachael will be starting a new job here in Nelson after successfully completing her required training to register as a Dietitian in British Columbia. Hurrah ! She is really looking forward to getting back into dietetics again and has agreed to working 4 days per week (don't want to be working too hard really).
The hospital is just along the street from our house and will be an 8 minute walk which is great although there will be no excuses when it comes to getting stuck in snow. Rachael completed part of her internship at Kootenay Lake Hospital so already knows the other dietitians and staff. The weather this month has been everything from snow to bright warm sunshine. On Sunday 15th March we had 35 cm snow over night. On Wednesday 25th March we had 16 degrees Celcius and even the animals were sunbathing out on the deck. Harley and Phantom are sat in Oscar's bed.
Rachael has been painting the master bedroom. This meant borrowing our neighbours scaffolding as the ceiling is 12ft tall, here is a picture during painting. We have changed from a pale green which was from when the house was built in 2000, to an off white with a darker green feature wall.
Shaun has been travelling with work this week to meet with new clients in San Jose in California. This involved a trip across the border to catch a flight from Spokane to Seattle, then a quick change to pickup the next flight directly to San Jose. Of the four flights there were incidents on three. On the second flight the a warning light to confirm the deployment of the nose landing gear failed to illuminate, after the pilot received visual confirmation from the ground we landed in San Jose with the emergency services and fire appliances chasing the plane down the runway and had to be towed to the gate just in case. The third flight included a call for a doctor/nurse to attend a woman suffering from extreme breathlessness, when she showed signs of improvement after being given oxygen all thoughts of diversion subsided. The final flight back to Spokane saw the plane run into a meteorological phenomenon called a mountain wave. For 30 seconds or more the plane was bounced up and down in the most terrific turbulance, even Shaun's friend who is a pilot looked very worried. The flight attendants had just visited the passengers with drinks, and when the plane eventually decended into calmed air the cabin looked like the aftermath of a slasher movie. Everyone was covered in red wine, it was dripping from the ceiling, the chap in front turned around and it was dripping from his chin; clothing, seats and the carpet was soaking. Shaun was bounced around like a cowboy on a bucking bronco because he had forgotton to fasten his seatbelt again after the person next to him had visited the loo and had to hold onto the table in front to prevent being slammed into the ceiling. Needless to say, when everyone had settled down there was a little ripple of nervous laughter. Shaun believes he stared into the eyes of Fate that day but The Lady was playing on his side to win.
At Shaun's birthday party we had great fun dressing up Oscar with one of the party hats. He wasn't really very happy about it.
With the Spring here and Summer on its way we are looking forwards to climbing and canoeing again.
